Resolve synchronisation issues after upgrade to IBM Notes Traveler

IBM Notes Traveler has the new feature to access the users mail server with the same rights as the user. But if you forget to add the IBM Notes Traveler server to the field "Trusted Servers" in the server document of the Mail Server, you receive the following errors:

An exception occurred when opening database <MailServerPath>/user.nsf using user shortname CN=John Doe /O=IBM in order to retrieve changed documents. Exception information: Throw: TASK_PROFILE_OPEN_DB

*** Content Adapter Exception *** ERROR 23 (ERR_DATABASE_ERROR) --- Debug Info ------------: Database cannot be opened with status of 0x17eb. Server=<MailServerPath>database=mail/user.nsf
INFO Mntr-0a78[Master]John Doe dna.cpp.jniDoesDatabaseExist#8427 Internal Error: Debug Data: Could not open Database='mail/jdoe.nsf' on server=<MailServer>' PathName='<MailFilePath>' for user 'CN=John Doe /O=IBM'. Error(17eb)=You are not listed as a trusted server

You can easily get rid of those errors either by:
  • disable the new feature by setting the following NOTES.INI entry on the IBM Notes Traveler Server
    • NTS_USER_SESSION=false
  •  Add the IBM Notes Traveler Server to the "Trusted Servers" field of the Mail Server in the second tab "Security"

Inbox empty

Today I received a call from a customer where the inbox did not display any content at some users - but only in the Notes client, not in iNotes !!

After some investigations I remembered, that I had this issue some months ago and found the following IBM technote:

So if you create a folder with and the first character of the folder is a space, this folder is displayed instead of the inbox and it seems, that the inbox is empty.

You can easily get rid of this error by simply deactivating the option "Strict Date/Time input" like mentioned in the following TN:

After removing this setting the user was able to change the date and time inside the calendar entry.

Enforcing quotas on new mail or Calendar entry creation in local or server based mail files

Last week I had the request to obtain the quota on the mail file when creating local replicas. After some search, I found this NOTES.INI entry:

This setting is not only used when creating local replicas, but also to check the quota when creating new mails !!

IBM Notes/Domino 9.0.1 Feature Pack 8 available

Today IBM release the announced Feature Pack 8 with a lot of great new features:

first of all there´s a separate download for the template of the Domino NAB and the Mail template on IBM Fix Central: Template Download

Move views out of databases
You can move views out of databases into separate view index files (.NDX files). This feature is useful for large databases and provides the following benefits:
> A smaller database file size, to avoid reaching the 64GB limitation.
> Faster database backup and restore.
> Better performance by allowing concurrent access to database and views.

For more information, see the following link:

Increase the document summary data limit to 16 MB

You can increase the document summary data limit on Notes® 9 databases. Summary data is data in non-rich-text fields, number fields, and date-time fields.

Previously the combined size of all summary data fields in a document was limited to 64 K. This limit is now 16 MB. The size limit for a single field is still 64 K. The size limit for views is still 64K for the combined key and data.
To increase the summary data limit on a database, use the following server command:

    load compact -LargeSummary on database.nsf
Java JRE version 1.8 provided with Domino

The Java run time environment provided with Notes and Domino has been upgraded to Java JRE version 1.8 to provide you with access to the latest features. Domino Designer continues to compile with Java 1.6.

Enable the Group By Date feature in all mail files

Administrators can push the notes.ini setting EnableGroupByDate=1 to Notes clients to enable the Show > Group By Date option in mail files. When enabled, messages in the Inbox, All Documents view, and personal folders on the IBM Notes client are grouped by relative date: Today, Yesterday, Last Week, and so forth.

Users can select Show > Group By Date to turn off the setting.
For more information, see the topic Enabling the Group By Date feature in all mail files.

Enable the Show Beginning of Message feature in all mail files

Administrators can push the notes.ini setting EnableBeginningOfMessage=1 to Notes clients to enable the Show > Beginning of Message option in mail files.

When enabled, Notes client users see the first 100 characters of a message in their Inbox or personal folders along with the subject. Users can select Show > Beginning of Message to turn off the setting.

For more information, see the topic Enabling the Show Beginning of Message feature in all mail files.

Retain MIME formatting when forwarding or replying to internet messages

Administrators can push the notes.ini setting KeepReplyForwardMime=1 to Notes standard clients. This setting retains MIME message formatting when users reply to or forward messages received from the internet. Without this setting, MIME messages are converted to Notes Rich Text which can cause some MIME formatting to be lost.

When this setting is enabled and users respond to or forward messages from the internet, the Notes embedded browser is used to display the original messages with MIME fidelity. Users can't edit the original messages, but they can copy information from them and paste it into their responses.
For more information, see the topic Retaining MIME formatting when forwarding or replying to internet messages.

Notes browser plug-in is no longer part of Notes package

The Notes browser plug-in is no longer provided with the Notes client package. IBM Client Application Access (ICAA), a new lightweight client that provides access to Notes applications, can be used instead. ICAA is available to Notes customers free of charge and can be downloaded from Passport Advantage®. For more information, see the IBM Client Application Access documentation.

ADFS 3.0 now supported as a SAML federated identity provider

Microsoft Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) 3.0 can be used as a Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) federated identity provider (IdP). For more information, see the section Using Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) to configure federated-identity authentication.

If you decide to install IBM Domino 9,0.1 FP8, don't forget to upgrade IBM Lotus Traveler to, otherwise Traveler will not work due to the update of the JVM to version 1.8

Open Mic Webcast: Configuring an IBM Domino Web Server to use Web federated Login (SAML)

IBM is offering an Open Mic Webcast about configuring SAML authentication on a IBM Domino Web Server.

This procedure ensures that an IBM Domino Web server can participate in SAML-based single sign-on (SSO). The Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) standard allows a Domino server to trust an authentication assertion from a specified identity provider (IdP).

After a presentation, attendees will be given an opportunity to ask our panel of experts questions. Throughout the event, attendees will also be encouraged to comment or ask questions in the IBM Connections Meetings Web chat. Follow us on Twitter @IBM_ICSsupport.

Moving Android devices from unsecure to secure communication with IBM Notes Traveler

IBM released a very smart way to switch Android devices to HTTPS communication with IBM Notes Traveler servers:

Your IBM Verse for Android applications connect to your on-premises IBM Traveler server using an unencrypted HTTP connection instead of an encrypted HTTPS connection. Since the IBM Traveler server can use unencrypted HTTP connections immediately without any additional setup, some installations may have skipped the HTTPS setup procedures prior to deploying Verse for Android to users. To ensure that all your communications are encrypted, first enable HTTPS either on your IBM Traveler server or on an edge proxy. Then ensure the IBM Verse for Android app begins using the encrypted connection without requiring any manual intervention from your users.

Resolving the problem
This feature requires the following components at the specified minimum version levels:
· IBM Traveler server, version (or later)
· IBM Verse for Android app, version (or later)

If all the IBM Verse for Android apps have not yet upgraded to the required minimum level prior to the completion of these steps, then it is recommended you keep HTTP port 80 enabled until you can ensure all apps have been upgraded. It is not required that all users upgrade at the same time.

1. Enable your IBM Traveler server to use HTTPS. Typically, this will be the Domino server that hosts your Traveler server, but it could also be an edge proxy. If this is a Domino server, Domino 9.0.1 fp5 or later is recommended. See the following for more information on this task:

Also reference the article Securing connections for IBM Traveler mobile applications for the latest updates on security requirements for IBM Traveler servers and mobile apps.

2. Update the "External Server URL" field on the Traveler server to change the current server URL to start with “https://” instead of "http://". This can be done either through the current configuration document, by updating notes.ini, or by using the domino console. For more information, see:

3. Before forcing all IBM Verse for Android apps to use the new URL, test the HTTPS connection to ensure that it works properly. The first test is to ensure that the HTTPS port is working properly and routing to the IBM Traveler server. You can use a web browser to easily validate this. Open a browser page, connect to your Traveler Server External URL, and login using an ID. For example, if your Traveler server External URL is, use a web browser to connect to that page and validate that you do not see any errors.

4. Test the setup with a few devices that are connected to your IBM Traveler server using the HTTP connection. To do this, issue these commands at the domino console:

    tell traveler policy setdevice tsExternalURLEnforced=1 <deviceId> <user>
tell traveler push flagsadd serviceability configGet <deviceId> <user>

Where <deviceId> and <user> are the device ID and user you are testing. You can obtain the <deviceId> of a user that has previously connected to the Traveler server using the command:

tell traveler show <userid>

5. Sync the test devices to ensure that the sync is working properly. From within the Verse for Android app, open Settings > Server and validate that the field called Use Secure Protocol is checked.

NOTE: Ensure that everything syncs normally and shows as secure. If you push an incorrect server URL to the mobile app, the only way to recover is to remove and reinstall the Verse app on the device.

6. After you have verified that the External Server URL is correct and your migrated device can sync, set the IBM Traveler server to enforce this property for all devices by entering the following command into the Domino server console:

    set config NTS_EXTERNAL_URL_ENFORCED=true

This command migrates the rest of your IBM Verse for Android apps (that meet the minimum level) to use your secure server URL.

7. Restart the IBM Traveler server to have the settings take effect.

8. Once all your IBM Verse for Android apps have been updated, you can disable the HTTP port on your Domino server, assuming it is not required for other applications that are using the same server.
